The Disciple's Vow

At times I feel overwhelmed, alone and afraid. I don't even recognize myself sometimes and I feel as if I've transformed into an entirely different person. I've learned that, like a marriage, it is impossible for one to truly know their spiritual partner. One could spend his or her entire life with someone and still have a shallow or incomplete understanding of that individual. A spiritual master may see only what representation the disciple portrays of him/herself. (The eternal spiritual master who resides in the heart, Sri Guru, however, is never fooled.)
Disciples frequently lack the maturity or complexity to understand the desire and wishes of the spiritual master. Likewise, it is daunting to understand the Self. While the pact between master and disciple is before God to each other, allegiance in spiritual life is also an allegiance to the Self. The disciple is obligated to act always in his spiritual best interest. By no exaggeration, it is the primary priority of the initiated disciple to remain chaste to her eternal spiritual identity and duty. Failure to do so would hamper all progress and lead her astray; in fact, such misgivings could turn her away from the spiritual path entirely if given to offenses and accumulated misconceptions.
I do not know my Self. I do not understand my Self. I've often succumbed to doubt, temptation, fear and, most of all, hesitation. I fear to act, speak, feel or think for fear that it may not be palatable to others. I fear that my actions could be misconstrued or condemned or deemed reckless. I've found few things that truly bring me joy-- music, martial arts, and dedicated study. I've found that often I learn more valuable lessons in pursuit of mundane knowledge than in a dry discourse. I've seen drug addicts, addicts of the flesh, gamblers and so-called lost souls with more humanity, compassion and wisdom to offer than even the most weathered practitioner in temple. I find their lessons most valuable, relevant and influential-- for they remind me that the Lord can lead anyone back Home just as easily as illusion can lead her astray.
O Keshava! I've seen You staring back at me in the pages of a book. I have seen the Lord-- He was hidden between scribbled notes on the page. The Lord was found in careful arithmetic and calculations, in the relaxed breath between poetic phrases, dancing amid notes on sheet music. He was intelligence, beauty, an exasperated sigh and fluent understanding breaching forth from the page. I felt the Divinity within myself, around me, encoded within the multiverse, and brimming forth unbounded! I felt alone in this realization as I feared no one else had this same vision and yet I felt swaddled, safe in the Divine Feminine's arms.
Of all my identities, I found that the one I treasure, protect and keep hidden is the one that I should nurture and cultivate. She is locked away in a tower, accessible only with great effort. She is appalled and frustrated and distrustful of the outside world. She lives in her own imagination, in a fantastic faery-tale realm with ivory towers that offer her fortification from the grotesque. She is alone and peaceful, and yet restless and yearning for escape. She remains chaste, loyal and faithful to her spiritual master and awaits patiently his orders and instructions!

My Moon

I woke up in the middle of the night tossing and turning today. After composing this, I fell sound asleep and slept through the night! I figured it must be some enchantment spell so I wrote it down for later use.

Ode to A Moon

When I pursue you, you hide yourself.
When I flee you, you chase me.
When I hold my gaze, you shy away.
When I ignore you, you take me!

Anxiously Awaiting You

I saw you again today. I had almost forgotten all about you, and put you out of my mind when I saw you again. My mind was thoroughly exhausted today. I was blank, empty and alone but then I spotted your lovely face. I wanted to turn around and run to you, hug you, kiss you, embrace you, and tell you everything. I wanted to gush out all my thoughts, feelings and emotions. I wanted to cry in your arms and tell you how I missed seeing you around. I wanted to scream in happiness and jump for joy simultaneously. Alas, I don't think you felt the same, or at least, you were good at hiding it. I don't know whether you even recognize me anymore. Have you forgotten all about me? I know I haven't. I don't want to forget you ever again, darling. Please don't ever leave me again. You have no idea how intensely I've missed you and craved seeing you and hearing you. Why can't we just see each other on the side? We could sneak out at night and rendezvous in confidential meeting places. We could hold each other near and whisper all the deepest longings of our hearts. I'm left here panting and panicking over you, and you hardly notice me at all.

Feel More, Write Less

I'm want to change my attitudes about writing, speech and expression in general so I'm trying a new exercise. With this exercise, I'm trying to accomplish expression without too many words. I hope I'm communicating myself better, and, eventually own my power of speech. If this sounds a lot like affirmations, its because it is. I got this idea from an Oprah episode I watched last night. Okay, I watched about five minutes but I think I got the gist of it all. Things I want to talk about today are:
  • juice- I'm still juicing and improving my eating habits. For my Karttik vow, I want to conquer my lust for food, control my tongue and abstain from unhealthy foods. I'm exercising my self-control, will power and engaging in this small austerity in hopes of attaining clarity and fortitude.
  • jewelry- I removed most of my jewelry today which consist mainly of astrological gemstones and "status" ornaments. I realised how attached I am to status, beauty and opulence, in the case of astrological gems. For this month, I will not rely on gems and jewelry; I will own my own glamour, elegance and status with simplicity and grace. With this exercise I plan to gain control over my pride and false ego by remembering all opulence is rightful property of Bhagavan and Sri Hari removes all obstacles and encumbrances.
  • pranayam- I'm practicing five minutes morning and evening daily in order to strengthen and pacify the mind. With this exercise, I gain control over my own self and my mind becomes my most loyal friend and confidant.
With all the austeries this month, you may notice a lot of change. I'm in the middle of a transition right now, I'm changing my identity and views about myself among other things. I will take my time to find myself and would appreciate your patience and support. The affirmations are a tool I use to help me through this metamorphosis but my primary source of power come from mantra meditation, pranayam and other spiritual fountains. If you want to know more, just ask. Hare Krishna.

Close to the Heart

My dearest friends and readers,
Please know that I'm going through a mild to extreme transformation right now. I may or may not be able to update you from time to time. Sometimes I may even become so intense in my posts that it could possibly overwhelm or even scare you away. Please don't leave, bare with me, keep me company and fuel my flame. It IS contagious, so beware. :P With tons of love, Hare Krishna.

The Highest Power

Before I became a devotee, I was interested in all kinds of supernatural, mystical and occult powers; I felt that knowledge, even only in theory, was powerful and it didn't matter much to what depths I immersed myself in it. I had books about anything and everything ranging from simple candle magic, palmistry, caracoles, pendulums, and Santeria, most of which I acquired from my mother and maternal uncle, to black magic, demonic possession and ghost magic. I wanted knowledge of it all thinking, very foolishly, that knowledge of these arts would somehow make me more powerful although I never intended on actually practicing all of them. I wanted to protect myself from witchcraft, especially black magic, malefic spirits and demons by learning their methodology and shielding myself appropriately. Later, as I matured, I started giving up these practices and eventually threw away all my books, I began chanting Hare Krishna mantra along with a Shiva mantra that I picked up along the way, as I was still very much attached to psychic powers and divination. Several weeks later I started developing a psychic ability and it eventually developed into an incredibly acute siddhi, which had long disappeared during my adolescent years. Instead of indulging in it, which I imagine anyone would abuse, I started to pray to Lord Shiva, asking him to remove that ability from my possession or at least teach me how to turn it off. By Lord Shiva's mercy, I eventually started to realise the power of bhakti; realising that mystical powers are not the goal of human life, I became more and more attracted to Lord Krishna, chanting His names, and hearing about His pastimes. Fortunately, I have realised that psychic powers, the ability to foretell the future, conjure spirits and control ghosts, are all like the tiny, insignificant sparks that emanate from a roaring fire when compared with devotional service. From the perspective of a moth, these sparks are beautiful and alluring but that very same attractive fire will eventually be the death of the moth. Bhakti, the path of devotion to the Supreme Lord, is the highest power-- the ability to engage in direct devotional service to the All-Attractive Lord. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita: yānti deva-vratā devānpitṝn yānti pitṛ-vratāḥbhūtāni yānti bhūtejyāyānti mad-yājino 'pi mām "Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; and those who worship Me will live with Me."
By simple devotional service, sravanam, kirtanam, we can form an intimate relationship with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and arrive in the spiritual world, where we can associate with Him eternally. What other method is there, which is as simple and gives such a wonderful result?
